The tradeoff: they're louder (a small air pump runs continuously), they use oil much faster, and they're typically two to three times the price of ultrasonic units. What the Science Says About Essential Oils and Sleep

Before investing in a diffuser, it's worth understanding what the research does — and doesn't — support. The strongest evidence exists for three oils:

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). The most studied essential oil for sleep. The mechanism is thought to involve cedrol, a sesquiterpene that may stimulate parasympathetic nervous system activity.

What doesn't have evidence: Eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemon are excellent for daytime alertness but counterproductive for sleep. We've seen many "sleep diffuser blend" products that include eucalyptus — this is a marketing decision, not a scientific one.

Noise Is the Dealbreaker

Five of the eleven diffusers we tested produced audible humming or bubbling sounds above 35 dB — louder than a quiet bedroom (which typically sits around 30 dB at night).
