There's regular dry skin, and then there's the kind where your face feels tight twenty minutes after applying moisturizer. Where foundation settles into lines you didn't know you had. Occlusives create a physical barrier on the skin surface that prevents transepidermal water loss. Petrolatum, dimethicone (silicone), beeswax, and lanolin are occlusives. Why Ceramides Are the Key Ingredient for Dry Skin

Your skin's outermost layer — the stratum corneum — is often described as a "brick and mortar" structure. The "bricks" are dead skin cells (corneocytes), and the "mortar" is a lipid matrix composed of roughly 50% ceramides, 25% cholesterol, and 15% fatty acids. When this lipid matrix is depleted — through harsh cleansers, environmental stress, aging, or genetic conditions like eczema — the barrier develops gaps. Water escapes. Irritants enter. The skin becomes dry, sensitive, and reactive.

Ceramides are the most critical repair ingredient because they replenish the specific lipids that the barrier is missing. Dr. Peter Elias, a dermatologist at UCSF and one of the leading researchers on skin barrier function, has published extensively on the ratio of lipids needed for effective barrier repair. TEWL measurement: We used a Tewameter TM 300 to measure transepidermal water loss at baseline, 1 hour, 4 hours, and 8 hours post-application. TEWL is the gold standard for assessing barrier function — it measures how much water vapor escapes through the skin, with lower numbers indicating better barrier performance. A healthy, well-moisturized face typically shows TEWL of 8–12 g/m²/h. Chronically dry skin often reads 18–25 g/m²/h.

Corneometer hydration: Surface hydration was measured with a Corneometer CM 825 at the same time points. This measures the water content of the upper skin layers and is expressed in arbitrary units (AU), where values above 40 AU indicate adequate hydration and values below 30 AU indicate dryness.

What to Avoid

Alcohol-based formulas. Some "mattifying" moisturizers for oily-prone dry skin contain denatured alcohol (listed as "alcohol denat." or "SD alcohol") as a primary ingredient.
